How Getting an Insurance Quote Actually Works
What happens between the moment you ask for a price and the moment you have one, why the questions get specific, and what we do with your information.
People ask for a price and get back a questionnaire. It can feel like the long way around. It isn't. Here's what's happening on our side while you answer.
Step one: we build the risk, not the price
Before anyone quotes anything, we have to be able to describe what we're insuring. Year, make, model, and who drives it. Square footage, roof age, heating system, whether there's a pool or a wood stove. Prior claims, if any.
None of that is idle curiosity. It's the information carriers use to decide whether they want the risk at all, which is a separate question from what they'd charge for it. Guess at the inputs and you get a number that changes the moment it becomes a real policy. Most of the sticker shock people describe at renewal traces back to a quote built on guesses.
Step two: we market the policy
This is the part an independent agency does that a single-company site can't. We're independent, so one application goes out to a range of carriers, from standard markets through specialty and high-net-worth insurers, and we see which of them have an appetite for your particular situation.
Appetite is the operative word. Carriers are not interchangeable. One wants newer roofs. One is comfortable with a young driver on a performance car. One will not write a home with a certain heating setup at any price. Marketing your policies across a diverse stable of carriers is how you find the one that actually wants you, rather than the one willing to take you at a penalty.
Step three: you see the options side by side
You get the quotes together, with the differences explained in plain language. Not just the premium, but the deductible, the limits, and what each policy does differently. Cheapest and best are sometimes the same policy. When they're not, you should be told which is which and get to decide.
Step four: someone stays with the file
You're assigned a dedicated agent with a direct line. That's who you call at renewal, at a claim, or the day you buy a boat and want to know if it changes anything. The principal reviews all files and is available if you have additional concerns.
We don't sell your information, and we don't turn a quote request into a phone campaign. One conversation, at the pace you want it.
How long it takes
Simple auto, often the same day. A home with some history to it, or a small business, usually longer, because a real answer sometimes means going back to an underwriter with a question. We'd rather take the extra day than hand you a number that doesn't hold.
You can see the coverage we write first if you'd like the lay of the land, or begin a quote whenever you're ready.
